Natural Language Processing for Online Applications: Text Retrieval, Extraction, and Categorization (Natural Language Processing, 5)
Published in Hardcover by John Benjamins Publishing Co. (June, 2002)
Authors: Peter Jackson and Isabelle Moulinier
Average review score:

Excellent
I recommend this very highly. The words "online applications" in the title suggest that this book is about NLP for websites, but it's much more general than that; certainly any of the technologies discussed in it could in fact be implemented on a website, but "online applications" should be interpreted as meaning something like "applications that are made possible or commercially viable by the availability of large bodies of documents over the Internet."

The focus of the book is on technologies with commercial applications, and that aspect of the topics discussed in the book is addressed clearly and well. However, there's also plenty in the book that will be of interest to a researcher, especially one looking for an overview of a topic. In fact, the book reads much like a series of well-written review articles.

The first chapter of the book discusses some of the general issues and challenges in natural language processing, on a level
that should be accessible to pretty much anyone. (Actually, one of the really outstanding features of this book is its overall readability.) Subsequent chapters focus on information retrieval, information extraction, and text categorization. The final chapter has shorter sections on other topics, including summarization and named entity recognition.

All chapters of the book are characterized by high readability, clear explanations of algorithms (and I say that as someone who struggles with ANY algorithm), and good explanations of the relevant evaluation metrics.

This book would be a good starting point for anyone; if you're not a beginner in natural language processing, you'll still find much that's useful in this book.

Neural Computing: An Introduction
Published in Paperback by Adam Hilger (October, 1990)
Authors: R. Beale and T. Jackson
Average review score:

An excellent introduction to Neural Networks
This book is a great introduction to the subject of Neural Networks for someone with no background in the field. The book clearly presents a wide range of techniques for neural computing with sections dedicated to the background of the technique, algorithms for implementing the technique, the mathematics behind the algorithms, and examples where such networks have been used. All of the challenging mathematics are set aside in clearly marked sections which can be skipped by those not interested in the details. The language of the book is intentionally accessible, and the authors carefully indicate where neural networks are like and unlike real brain activity.

Each chapter has a bibliography indicating further references. Many are the actualy primary sources written by those who researched the field or technique discussed. For one instance, when the authors had changed terminology from a source for clarity, they even explained the words used by the original author to fascilitate studying the original sources.

For someone who has heard of neural networks but lacks a full understanding of what they do and how they work, this book is an excellent choice. After every chapter I was filled with a longing to go write a neural network to play with.

New Jerseyans in the Civil War: For Union and Liberty
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (May, 2000)
Author: William J. Jackson
Average review score:

An excellent study of New Jersey's role in the Civil War-
New Jerseyans in the Civil War is a readable and enjoyable study of New Jersey's role in the Civil War. The author's major theme is how the influence of popular attitude regarding race and slavery, evolving out of the state's history, conditioned its ambivilence towards the war. The author asserts that persistent, strident criticism of the conduct of war and its purposes, put New Jersey out of step with the rest of the northern states. Readers will find the book to be interesting not only for its focus on the state's unique role in the war, but as a microcosm of the causes of the Civil War, and its impact.

The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (June, 1998)
Average review score:

This lyric-book is great to read the scores of his music.
The Next Voice' songbook has a "something fine.." selection of Jacksons' best music. Altough,I feel there are many more tracks of his best not covered here. Our lady of the Well, example. Also this PBK could have had a current interview or comments by Jackson B. Does have the music notation fairly set down though; if occasionly simplified.I,m learning from it, eg.Barricades of Heaven, choice song.

Night Moves: Pop Music in the Late 70s
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (July, 2000)
Authors: Don Breithaupt, Jeff Breithaupt, and Joe Jackson
Average review score:

A Look at the Late 70's
Canadian brothers Don & Jeff Breithaupt examine the last five years of the 70's music scene in Night Moves. Just like their first 70's book, Precious & Few, each chapter is broken up to cover a certain type of music like punk, new wave & disco or examine a particular artist like Bruce Springsteen. The chapter heading lists essential songs from the subject. The brothers interject personal accounts into the stories that make for a nice touch. The book is a quick, easy and completely enjoyable read and together with Precious & Few offers a reverential and sunny look at the 70's.

Average review score:

Great illustrations!
My three year old daughter loves The Big Comfy Couch. She especially loves this book because of its vibrant colours and entertaining storyline. The pictures of Loonette and Molly are just like the show we watch on t.v. This book flows nicely and is fun for both parent and child.

No Place of Grace: Antimodernism and the Transformation of American Culture 1880-1920
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (March, 1994)
Authors: Jackson T.J. Lears and T. J. Jackson Lears
Average review score:

Lears Leers at Modernity
This Marxist who belives in God makes a fine statement for the apathy and delirium covering the angst of modern culture. His prose is fluid and his arguments are strong and clear. If you are convinced that technology has stripped you of your soul, you should read this book.

North With Lee and Jackson: The Lost Story of Gettysburg
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (June, 1996)
Author: James A. Kegel
Average review score:

Excellent, fresh account of Confederate strategy
A wonderful history. The author quotes extensively (with references cited) from letters, telegrams and orders to and from Lee, Jackson, and the other important Civil War leaders. These are woven into a narrative that includes the political and economic forces on both sides. The result is an extremely well documented, extremely informative, yet very readable account of the Confederate strategy and troop movements in Virginia, Maryland and Pennslyvania from the start of the War to the Gettysburg battle. If you want an in-depth understanding of the Confederate strategy, what they wanted to do in Pennsylvania, and how there came to be a battle at Gettysburg, this is the book to read.

One of my favorites.
This is one of my favorite easy piano solo books to practice Tchaikovsky with. I have absolutely no complaints about it. Just wish there were more like it with other composers.
